Native American Association: founded in 1837, became Native American Party in 1845. It joined with other nativist groups to form the Surpeme Order of the Star-Spangled Banner.
The Know- Nothings: orginization that they called the American Party. Won control of state government in Massachusettes. Their idea was to ban Catholics/alienate them from holding offices, enact more restrictive naturalizaiton and establish literacy tests for voting

The population in America was increasing rapidly due to people moving west as well as immigration due to problems in other countries, which led to Americans having feelings of nativism.

Irish- citizens born in Ireland that immigrated to eastern united states to and known as the unskilled labor force
German- citizens born in Germany that immigrated to America, arrived with the least amount of money and often migrated to the north west where they became farmers or went into business in the western towns.
Nativism- the thought that immigrants pollute the natural born American way. they believed that the immigrants stole jobs, spreading the power of the catholic church, and would become a racial force in politics

Although many Americans believed that immigrants were polluting the united states, where as in reality the immigrants were helping Americas and culture grow stronger.

Urbanization- The populations of several cities increased dramatically between 1840 to 1860. The populaton of New York rose from 312,000 to 805,000. By, 1860, 26 percent of the poplation of free states were living in towns or cities which was a 14 percent increase from 1840.
Immigrants- The majority of immigrants mainly came from Ireland and Germany. Germans were the farmers while the Irish stayed in cities and worked on the internal improvements, like roads; both were sources of cheap labor since they needed money.
Nativism- It was basically the feeling of the discrimanting against the immigrants mainly because the Irish and Germans were taking away their jobs. They took away the jobs because they worked for lower wages.
"Know-Nothings"- this was a group of Americans joined together in order to exclude the immigrants from normal American life like banning them from church or preventing them from holding public office.

There was a huge increase in population growth from 1840 to 1860; In 1820, there were 10 million but by the time it was 1860, there was 17 million people. Another contribution to the population growth was the immigrants; by 1860, there more than 1.5 million Irish-born and about 1 million German-born people in the United States. Germans would usually arrive with their families and eventually had family businesses; Irish, on the other hand, came separately and most of them were women who worked in factories. Several American citizens were against the immigrants since they were taking away the jobs that the Americans felt were rightfully theirs.

Since there was a great acceleration in the population growth and it was mostly made up of the Irish and Germans, they consequently took away jobs from the American citizens.
